What is Udupi saree

The Udupi Saree is the unique craft of the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts also known as Tulunad in the state of Karnataka  in India. The beauty of these sarees is not only in its exquisite tapestry but also in being rooted in the rich history, culture, and tradition of the region. The  Udupi sarees are woven since nearly  hundred and fifty years  on the Malabar Frame looms introduced by the  Basel Mission of Germany.

Also known as the Magga saree, they have contrasting colors on the  body, border & pallu woven through intricate warp and weft patterns. Dyeing the pallu portion of the  warp in a darker hue, applying starch on the loom while weaving, and weaving motifs using extra warp techniques add to the exclusivity of these sarees. These durable sarees, which can be heirlooms, gifts of tradition to your loved ones, or a share of history in your wardrobes, are made from the finest single-ply cotton yarn dyed locally in soothing colors. You can choose from various combinations, including a lighter shade of either chequered pattern on the body with a contrasting colour on the border and pallu. These sarees also rest easy on one’s consciousness as they are woven using natural dyes and eco-friendly vat-dyes with no or least ecological damage and are a delight for conscious buyers as they also support sustainable rural livelihoods.

It was with these intentions that the Kadike Trust began the Udupi Saree Revival program in 2018 at the Talipady Weavers Society. Among the many interventions of the Trust, making visible the identity of the weaver who made the saree, honouring weavers in various ways and increased and fair remuneration to the weavers, training for upcoming and interested weavers with financial support from the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development have seen a steadily increased uptake of these dying art form.
